Geography

Welcome to Geography at St Thomas’
Geography at St Thomas’ inspires children to be curious about the world and their place within it. Through engaging, meaningful learning experiences, pupils explore places, environments and cultures, developing a deeper understanding of how the world works and how people interact with it. Our curriculum encourages children to ask questions, think critically and make connections, helping them become informed, responsible global citizens.
At St Thomas’, our Geography curriculum follows the Kapow Primary Geography scheme to support the delivery of our curriculum, where children regularly revisit and build on previous knowledge and skills. Pupils develop a strong understanding of the wonderful world around them through a balance of declarative knowledge (key facts and concepts about places, people and environments) and procedural knowledge (the skills needed to apply this understanding). Learning is carefully connected, so knowledge is meaningful, purposeful and can be used in different contexts, helping children grow into confident, curious geographers. Children investigate the human and physical features of their immediate surroundings through local fieldwork, map work and first-hand experiences.
Exploring the local area of Kidsgrove is a very important part of our Geography curriculum and ensures pupils develop a strong sense of place, ensures understanding of how their community has developed over time and helps them to make meaningful links between local, national and global geography.
You are invited to explore our Geography Learning Journey below to gain a clear insight into what the children will learn at each stage of their time here at St Thomas’. This overview shows how knowledge, skills and vocabulary are carefully taught, developed and built upon, helping pupils grow in confidence and understanding as geographers.
