RE curriculum lead: Mrs K Buggy

At St Thomas' CofE Academy, Religious Education (RE) plays a central role in nurturing pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Through RE, children are encouraged to explore life’s big questions, develop respect for others, and grow in understanding of the beliefs and values that shape our world.

Our RE curriculum is rooted in the Christian faith, while also valuing and respecting the rich diversity of religions and worldviews represented in modern Britain. We follow the Discovery RE programme alongside Understanding Christianity, ensuring a balanced, engaging and progressive approach to learning.

Using Understanding Christianity, pupils develop a deep and thoughtful understanding of Christian belief through key theological concepts such as Creation, Incarnation and Salvation. This approach helps children to make connections between Bible texts, Christian beliefs and the way these beliefs are lived out today.

Alongside this, Discovery RE supports pupils in exploring a range of world faiths through an enquiry-based approach. Lessons encourage children to ask questions, reflect, discuss and evaluate, helping them to build knowledge, empathy and respect for others.

Through RE, we aim to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding and support children in developing their own beliefs and values, while living out our Christian vision of love, respect and compassion for all.
